  • Task

The objectives of the remediation of any municipal solid waste landfill are:

    • Reduction of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere
    • Protection of groundwater from contamination
    • Prevention of landfill leachate formation
    • Effective biogas removal
    • Prevention of erosion and landslide processes caused by precipitation and snowmelt.
    • Landscaping of the remediated landfill.
    Solution

To protect waste from atmospheric precipitation, a technical solution for the external waterproofing of the landfill body is used: creating a sealed cover over the waste.

To reinforce the landfill surface and slopes, RD/M geogrid with a protective geotextile layer is installed. Hydromat 3D serves as a drainage layer for biogas. Insulating layers consisting of Bentotech bentonite mat of ASL grade and a type 4/2 geomembrane are then installed. A second drainage layer with Hydromat is required to drain rainwater and meltwater from the landfill surface.

To prevent landfill leachate from entering groundwater, an impermeable sheet-pile wall made of profiled PVC sheet piling (Geoshpunt) is installed around the landfill perimeter and embedded into the aquiclude.

A mechanically stabilised earth retaining wall is a technical solution involving the use of Stabigrunt material to reinforce the slopes of the landfill body and prevent erosion and landslide processes. This retaining wall is resistant to uneven foundation settlement.

Landscaping the landfill with Biomat is part of the technical solutions used for its comprehensive reclamation. RD geogrid is used to reinforce the landfill roadway.

A storage tank for toxic leachate is constructed from reinforced concrete slabs. A prefabricated underground polymer BlokTech tank is intended for collecting stormwater runoff.

    Technology advantages
    • A comprehensive approach to addressing MSW landfill reclamation challenges.
    • Proven technical solutions applied at dozens of Russian MSW landfills.
    • All geosynthetic materials from a single manufacturer — cost-effective and convenient.
    • Certificates of conformity for all manufactured products.
