A geocomposite mat made of two layers of nonwoven organic fibre containing perennial grass seeds and nutrient mixtures.
Biomat (dry lawn)

Biomat is a composite, three-layer material. It consists of two layers of nonwoven natural fabric  and an inner layer containing grass seeds and a nutrient mixture. The layers are joined by needle-punching, ensuring uniform distribution and fixation of the nutrient mixture and grass seeds within the framework.

Depending on areal density, biomats are divided into 2 types:

  • Type 1 — biomat with an areal density of 600 g/m²
  • Type 2 — biomat with an areal density of 800 g/m²

By agreement with the customer, biomat can also be manufactured and supplied with a different areal density.

Biomat Applications
  • Restoration and revegetation of erosion-control coverings on the slopes of road and railway embankments, the slopes of drainage structures, and pipeline routes.
  • Land reclamation and restoration of vegetation cover and erosion protection as part of engineering protection of the territory.
  • Revegetation of areas (gardens, public gardens and parks) and landscape design.
  • Construction of retaining walls.

The material is particularly effective in the challenging natural conditions of the Far North, where the natural environment is especially sensitive to external impacts and active wind and water erosion of the soil is common. Biomat enables restoration of the soil and vegetation layer during the first summer season. Within 2–3 years, the biomat completely dissolves in the soil, forming a turf cover with a plant root system up to 0.4 m deep and providing high mechanical strength. The seed mix is selected in accordance with the relevant natural and climatic zones.

Advantages of Biomat
  • Fast greening
  • Uniform grass cover
  • Easy installation
  • Environmental safety
  • Protection of soil from erosion and wind erosion

There are three main ways to restore a lawn after earthworks: sow seeds by hand, lay turf rolls or use «Biomat» (dry lawn). The latter option has advantages over the first two.

Seeds sown by hand are exposed to birds, which peck at them, and are vulnerable to being blown away by the wind. As a result, the grass cover is uneven — additional seeds have to be sown, which again does not guarantee a good result.

Turf rolls solve the problem with birds — the ready-made grass cover looks uniform and aesthetically pleasing. However, the material is not easy to install, and a special roller is often required. In addition, turf rolls must be laid within 24 hours of delivery; otherwise, the seedlings will die.

Biomat combines the advantages of both options without their drawbacks. The seeds are placed between layers of nonwoven organic fibre, so they are inaccessible to birds and protected from the wind. The grass cover will be uniform. «Biomat» is very easy to install — simply place it on the site and cover it with 1–2 cm of soil. Unlike turf rolls, biomat can be stored for several years, depending on the conditions.
