Project Description
The former landfill accumulated waste for 11 years near water intakes, lakes and summer cottages. The site posed a health risk to more than 800,000 residents. Before reclamation began, specialists collected soil samples and found that the content of Class 1 hazardous pollutants in all samples exceeded the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC).
Technical SolutionsTo prevent the spread of contaminants into the environment, a vertical cut-off wall 21,855 linear metres long was constructed from 1,819 soil-cement columns embedded to a depth of up to 21 m around the entire perimeter of the landfill, and an insulating cover made of «ТехПолимер» geosynthetic materials was installed. Protective cover structure:
- Geogrid Армосет-П - for slope reinforcement.
- Geocomposite drainage layer - for creating a gas drainage layer.
- Geotextile - to prevent mixing of the layers.
- Sand.
- Bentonite mat Бентотех АСЛ - to provide additional gas and waterproofing of the drainage layer.
- Sand.
- Geotextile for geomembrane protection.
- Geomembrane Type 4/1 - for gas and waterproofing.
- Hydromat 3D - provides drainage of surface runoff.
- Peat-sand mixture.
- Biomat - for rapid revegetation, formation of a turf layer, and reinforcement and drainage of slopes during reclamation.
Two storage ponds were constructed with an emergency drawdown system; a biogas collection system was also installed and the site was landscaped.
