Corrugated Polymer Pipes in Leachate Collection and Drainage Systems at Solid Household and Municipal Waste Landfills

18 October 2022

Any landfill is a hazardous element of the natural environment and a source of leachate generation—the main factor in the release of pollutants into environmental components.

One of the main environmental protection requirements for the construction of solid domestic and municipal waste (SDW and MSW) landfills is to fully preserve the quality of groundwater and surface water. Therefore, landfill construction designs must prevent environmental risks posed by the facility under construction and in operation to environmental components and provide systems for the collection, conveyance and treatment of toxic leachate. The composition and quantity of generated leachate depend on the landfill life-cycle stage and may vary between landfills. The maximum volumes of leachate are generated at a fully filled landfill before reclamation.

TechPolymer began producing polymer corrugated «TechnoCobra» and «GofroCobra» pipes for use in leachate drainage and conveyance systems. Polymer "TechnoCobra" pipes are manufactured by extrusion from high-quality raw materials and significantly outperform pipelines made of alternative materials in terms of their performance characteristics. These pipes are strong and lightweight, with high quality and performance characteristics.

"GofroCobra" pipes have similarly high strength and geometrical characteristics. At the same time, the ring stiffness of the pipes does not change as a result of creating water intake openings by perforation.

The protective filter coating is made of a high-strength polymer material and provides filtration strength at the contact between the drainage system and the soil; it protects against suffosion in unstable soils (for example, weak limestone, chalk, gravel and sand); and prevents crushed stone from entering the drainage cavities.

The quantity and arrangement of the water intake openings may be changed in agreement with the customer. Depending on the design solutions, partial or full perforation is selected.

Description of the leachate collection and conveyance system using pipes manufactured by TechPolymer

  1. The ring drainage system and drainage branches made of polymer corrugated perforated pipes «GofroCobra» (TU 22.21.21-029-56910145-2021) collect leachate generated in the landfill body as a result of chemical and biological processes, as well as infiltrated atmospheric precipitation entering the landfill body before its surface is closed with waterproof materials. The drains are laid along the bottom of specially prepared trenches on a sand bed, with a reverse filter installed. The drainage depth varies depending on the base at the bottom of the landfill body.
  2. The contaminated leachate is discharged by gravity into the main collector, consisting of corrugated pipes «TechnoCobra» (TU 22.21.21-028-56910145-2021). Contaminated wastewater is conveyed through the drainage collector to the wastewater pumping station, after which it is conveyed through a pressure pipeline to the leachate collection tank.

The drainage system will operate effectively and provide a long service life only if high-quality products are used and their authenticity is confirmed by technical documentation.

Operation of the drainage system requires periodic inspection of the pipe condition, minor repairs and, where necessary, cleaning. Carrying out the designed measures will ensure the reliable collection and conveyance of leachate to treatment facilities.
