Jet Grouting: from strengthening weak soils to addressing complex environmental challenges

16 June 2025

Jet Grouting – is a universal ground improvement method (Fig. 1), used both for standard construction tasks and particularly complex projects. Let us consider its capabilities using the example of the remediation of a sludge settling pond in Chapayevsk, on the site of the former Srednevolzhsky Chemical Plant.

Standard applications of the technology:

  • improvement of foundations beneath building and structure foundations,

  • construction of underground structures (walls, slabs),

  • ground stabilisation in tunnelling,

  • creation of cut-off walls,

  • reconstruction of emergency foundations.

Special case: localising a source of chemical hazard

At the former Srednevolzhsky Chemical Plant in Chapayevsk (Samara Region), the task was to remediate a site containing more than 400,000 tonnes of hazardous waste, including the construction of a cut-off wall (CFW) of the “diaphragm wall” type around the entire perimeter of the sludge settling pond.

Fig. 2. CFW layout plan

The source of contamination at the site was localised by constructing a CFW (Fig. 2) using the Jet Grouting ground jet grouting technology, consisting of more than 4,000 soil-cement piles.

  • Created an impermeable monolithic barrier 886 m long, 2 m thick and 27 m deep.
  • Provided a strength of 1.4 MPa in an aggressive environment (the sacrificial drill string “ERMAK” reinforces the body of the soil-cement pile).
  • Prevented the migration of contaminants into groundwater.
  • Met the design elevations through the use of a COMACCHIO drilling rig for precise positioning.

Why does it work?

  1. Adaptability – injection parameters can be selected for any type of soil.
  2. Reliability – reinforcement with an anchoring system prevents structural deformation.
  3. Environmental performance – complete isolation of the contamination source.

Jet grouting technology is in demand in civil and industrial construction, transport infrastructure, hydraulic engineering and environmental projects. Jet Grouting is an advanced method for ground improvement and addressing unique challenges in complex conditions.
