As part of the federal project “Clean Country” and the national project “Ecology”, rehabilitation of the Samossyrovsky municipal solid waste landfill in Kazan is ongoing to reduce its negative impact on the environment. The area of the rehabilitation site is 14.13 ha. Work began in 2021 and is being carried out in stages:
1. Technical stage.
2. Biological stage.

The technical stage includes examining the condition of the landfill body and its impact on the natural environment, and preparing the landfill area for subsequent intended use. This includes the construction of access roads and hydraulic structures, grading of the landfill body (moving landfill soil to fill low-lying areas), and forming slopes with the required angle of inclination; the collection, treatment and disposal of biogas; the collection and treatment of surface runoff; the development, transportation and placement of technological layers; and the creation of a multifunctional landfill rehabilitation cover, namely: installation on the upper part of the landfill and on the slopes of a cover made of modern geosynthetic waterproofing materials (“TIP4/1” geomembrane and 3D hydromat covered with geotextile on both sides). Upon completion of the waterproofing works, a protective soil layer is applied over the geomembrane and hydromat cover. A layer of fertile soil is applied over the protective layer for landscaping, followed by grass seeding.

The biological stage of rehabilitation includes a set of agrotechnical and phytoremediation measures aimed at restoring disturbed land.
The final works of the technical stage to create a waterproofing barrier are currently underway. To create this impermeable barrier, geosynthetic materials manufactured by TechPolymer Group are used across the entire landfill surface:
- 3D hydromat covered with geotextile on both sides .
According to the plan, the rehabilitation works to address the accumulated environmental damage should be completed in 2023.
