RD/M «ТехПолимер» Geogrid for Reinforcing Weak Foundations during Reconstruction of the Kachug Interchange in Irkutsk

As part of the large-scale reconstruction of the interchange on Kachugsky Trakt in Irkutsk, a temporary bypass road is being constructed. During the construction period, it will carry heavy traffic flows. To ensure subgrade stability under challenging engineering and geological conditions, modern geosynthetic materials are being used, including RD/M reinforced road geogrid, bonded to geotextile and manufactured by «TechPolymer».

Stabilisation of the temporary road subgrade
At the reconstruction site, specialists are preparing the subgrade for the future road embankment. The work includes strengthening weak, water-saturated soils by installing reinforced-concrete piles and laying RD/M geogrid. This material enables

  • even distribution of loads,
  • prevention of layer displacement,
  • increased subgrade bearing capacity, which is critical when arranging temporary bypass routes with heavy traffic.

RD/M STO 30478650-001-2012 consists of polyethylene strips (HDPE), with steel spring wire serving as the load-bearing element, thermally bonded to geotextile. This composite combines the reinforcing function of the geogrid with the separating/filtering function of the geotextile, which prevents interpenetration of the layers and increases the service life of the structure.

The project's significance for the region
The reconstruction of the Kachugsky interchange is one of the key infrastructure projects in Irkutsk Oblast. As Governor Igor Kobzev noted:

«The construction of a two-level interchange is an important step towards comprehensively addressing transport issues at the exit from Irkutsk».

Construction is being carried out as part of the national project «Infrastructure for Life». The cost of the work exceeds five billion roubles. Reconstruction is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The active phase of constructing the temporary bypass road is currently under way at the site. The road will have four traffic lanes and ensure traffic flow throughout the main construction period.
