TechPolymer Geosynthetics for Protecting Groundwater from Hazardous Leachate

The technical stage of remediation of the “Sovetskaya” landfill is under way in Omsk. Waste was deposited at the landfill from 1986 to 1999. The total remediation area will be 23.5 ha.

The existing landfill is an unorganized pile of waste on the land surface. According to engineering surveys, the aquifer that is fed by atmospheric precipitation is located close to the waste storage surface.

To protect groundwater from contamination by landfill leachate, the remediation project provides for the construction of a seepage barrier at the base of the municipal solid waste landfill, consisting of geosynthetic materials manufactured by “TechPolymer”

The contractor began work at the end of 2022. Waste mass relocation is currently under way. In addition, the waterproofing materials forming the bottom liner are being installed and welded.

The protective barrier consists of the following layers:

- bentonite mat “Bentotech” (a waterproofing mat equivalent to one metre of clay waterproofing, but requiring lower material and installation costs);

- 3D hydromat (a drainage mat with a water drainage function and geotextile coating on both sides);

- geomembrane (a thin polymer sheet with 100% impermeability);

- protective soil layer.

The body of the “Sovetskaya” landfill will be formed into a two-level truncated pyramid. The total height of the embankment will be 14 m, excluding the remediation layer.

The “Sovetskaya” landfill is expected to be fully remediated by 2024.
