The remediation of one of the region’s most problematic landfills — the Novocherkassk municipal solid waste landfill — is nearing completion in the Rostov Region. The site, covering 9.3 ha, has been contaminating the environment for decades and is now undergoing the final stage of environmental restoration.
From an environmental threat to a sustainable solution
Although formally closed in 2013, the landfill, which had been operated since the Soviet era, continued to grow, becoming a source of air, soil and groundwater pollution. According to experts, the landfill accumulated over 5 million tonnes of waste.
Engineering solutions: an integrated approach
The remediation required the use of modern technologies:
- Multilayer protective barrier with a geomembrane and bentonite mats provides complete waterproofing
- Passive degassing system with drainage mats Hydromat 2D controls biogas emissions
- Biomats accelerate the restoration of vegetation cover
Result: safety and ecosystem restoration
Implemented under the federal Clean Air project of the national Environmental Well-Being project, the project demonstrates the effectiveness of modern remediation methods. This summer, the former landfill site will cease to pose a threat to the environment and local residents.
