TechPolymer Geotubes for the Eco-Rehabilitation of the Miass River: An Expert Solution for Large-Scale Projects

The eco-rehabilitation of the Miass River continues in Chelyabinsk—one of the largest water body clean-up projects in Russia, scheduled to run until 2028 as part of the national Environmental Well-Being project. At challenging sites (Zayachy Island and Kommunar Pond), dredgers are in operation, while geotubes manufactured by TechPolymer Group are a key component of the project.

How the technology works

Sludge extracted from the riverbed is pumped through a slurry pipeline into woven synthetic containers—geotubes (STO 56910145-016-2015). Thanks to the geotextile’s high filtration properties, water drains freely while solid particles are reliably retained inside. The separated water undergoes local treatment and is returned to the river, while the dewatered sludge is stabilised for further use (as technogenic or potentially fertile soil).

Results and plans

To date, more than 1.5 million cubic metres of bottom sediments have been removed from the river. By the project’s completion in 2028, the clean-up volume will reach 7.5 million cubic metres.
