On 11 July, the online publication "MK in Serpukhov" reported on an on-site event at the Lesnaya landfill in the Moscow Region:«Lesnaya»:
Reclamation work has been underway here for the second year. The completion deadline is November 2024.
Municipal Head Sergey Nikitenko, together with Tikhon Firsov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Moscow Region, First Deputy Minister Pavel Bida, colleagues from the Moscow Region Ministry of Ecology, and contractors, held an on-site meeting at the facility and reviewed the progress of the work.
"The work is progressing at a fast pace, but we can see where additional efforts are needed. The delivery of non-metallic materials must be increased, and more equipment and specialists must be brought in," Sergey Nikitenko noted.
The main stage of work is currently underway. It includes the installation of a reclamation screen, construction of a reinforced-soil wall, installation of a degassing system, and collection and transportation of leachate.
The placement of non-metallic materials is nearing completion. Their delivery will be increased to 1,500 cubic metres per day. This will be followed by soil placement, grass seeding, assembly of a gas collection system for gas removal, and commissioning of all equipment.
Sergey Nikitenko commented to "MK in Serpukhov": "Lesnaya is the last of the 39 landfills closed in the Moscow Region. The work is being carried out as part of the Clean Country Federal Project. The main objective is to eliminate all negative impacts on local residents, especially odours. After the work is completed, monitoring of the landfill body will continue. It is a living natural organism that requires a long recovery period."
