How can dam reliability be improved and the “failure due to loss of filtration strength” scenario avoided?

The Government of Russia will allocate RUB 1 billion to the Amur Region (Order No. 2513-r dated 11 September 2025) for flood protection. In light of these events, the issue of seepage-control reliability is once again relevant.

Layer-by-layer analysis of a protective flood-control engineering solution (using a sheet-pile wall embankment with an access road as an example)

  • PVC Geospunt with interlocks: Creates a watertight "wall in the ground", preventing water seepage through the embankment body and foundation.
  • Geomembrane: Provides waterproofing in the upper part of the structure.
  • Composite Geogrid RD/M at the base of the embankment: Contributes to stability. Increases bearing capacity, distributes the load and prevents the mixing of soil layers.

This layered application of geosynthetics is the key to creating strong and durable protective structures.
