Major rehabilitation of the R-254 “IRTYSH” highway using “TechPolymer” Concrete Pavement

At the request of the Federal State Institution “Federal Road Administration “Southern Urals” of the Federal Road Agency”, a design was prepared by OOO “Roads of the Volga Region”. The design provides for the major repair of the “Irtysh” highway in four stages. The works are planned to be completed by October 2024. As part of the project, 36 culverts are to be replaced, as all of them have a 1.0 m opening, which does not meet the requirements for the minimum opening size when the roadbed is widened (according to GOST 32871-2014).

The major repair works on the linear facility, which began in July 2021, are to be carried out without interrupting traffic, in accordance with the assignment. Therefore, it was proposed to replace the pipes with corrugated helical metal pipes, which, owing to their long continuous-wound sections and factory readiness, enable a high installation rate.

To date, repairs have been completed on a section of the R-254 “Irtysh” Chelyabinsk–Kurgan_Omsk–Novosibirsk highway from km 151+000 to km 202+000, located in the Mishkinsky and Yurgamyshsky districts of the Kurgan Region. The road section under consideration has technical category II according to GOST 33382-2015 and is located on the watershed between the Miass and Yurgamysh rivers. The terrain is predominantly gently undulating. Elevations range from 150 to 170 m Baltic System. The area is characterised by a large number of dry valleys, which are distinct terrain depressions where runoff occurs during snowmelt and periods of high-intensity rainfall. This road section does not cross permanent watercourses. The culverts are located at intersections with dry valleys, whose catchment areas are generally elongated along the road. No hydraulic connection between the crossed dry valleys and surface water bodies (rivers, streams or lakes) has been identified.

Solution description 

Concrete Canvas is a multilayer geocomposite material containing a dry fine-grained concrete mix; depending on the material type, its thickness may be 5, 8 or 13 mm (“Concrete Canvas “TechPolymer” T5, T8 and T13).

The geotextile layers securely retain the concrete mix inside the material and ensure uniform moisture distribution during hydration, prevent cracking and provide structural stability.

The material hardens after being wetted with water and forms a strong waterproof layer. After just 24 hours, it reaches 80% of its design strength, becoming a monolithic concrete structure 

This technology is a ready-to-use construction solution, so there is no need for additional materials, heavy special-purpose machinery or expensive equipment. As a result, it significantly reduces the project estimate and shortens the construction period. The material is supplied in compact rolls, and Concrete Canvas can be installed manually.
