When Energy Meets Geosynthetics: How Thermal Power Plant Ash and Slag Became Part of a “Smart” Barrier

On Energy Worker’s Day, we recall an example of an effective cross-industry approach. The landfill reclamation project implemented in Omsk at the municipal solid waste landfill of the Sovetsky Administrative District was the result of this cooperation.

Project overview and technical solution
When creating the landfill protective cap, instead of traditional sand,  82,000 tonnes of ash and slag from Omsk thermal power plants were used. This made it possible to utilise a significant volume of power generation waste. A multilayer geosynthetic protection system was implemented to isolate the landfill body:

Reinforcing RD geogrid — for stabilising and strengthening the layers of the “system”.

Drainage geocomposite “Gidromat” — ensured effective water drainage, eliminating the risk of excessive moisture in the foundation.

Two-layer waterproofing barrier:

  • Bentonite mat “Bentotech” — created a self-healing layer that compensates for possible microdamage.
  • Polymer geomembrane — formed the main impermeable cap with zero filtration

Biomat  —  the upper reclamation cover ensured simple and effective revegetation of the site.

Result 
The project successfully addressed two objectives: the utilisation of waste from power generation facilities and the creation of reliable engineering protection.
