On 19 July, the head of the Chelyabinsk Region, Alexey Texler, visited the Magnitogorsk Left-Bank Landfill on a working visit. The governor arrived at the site to assess the scope of the work completed.
«This is an extremely important and much-needed project. There must be a green hill instead of a landfill this year», Texler demanded.
The landfill site was closed for remediation two years ago, and the work is being carried out in accordance with the design solutions.
At this stage, reshaping of the landfill body has been completed. To remove biogas, vertical geodrains have been installed, and installation of the protective layer made of geomembrane is 80% complete. The contractor’s employees continue welding the seams of the polymer membrane to ensure the absolute impermeability of the containment screen, with more than 50% of the entire screen installed. The main process equipment is expected to arrive — units for biogas combustion and leachate treatment.
The remediation is being carried out as part of the federal Clean Air project. Once the work is completed, atmospheric emissions in Magnitogorsk will decrease by 16.7 thousand tonnes per year. It is the second-largest city in the region.
The Magnitogorsk Municipal Left-Bank Landfill received waste from 1957 to 2022. Over 65 years of operation, more than 5 million m3 of waste accumulated at the landfill. The remediation work is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
