Large-Scale Cleanup of the Miass River in Chelyabinsk Using Innovative Geosynthetic Technologies

The implementation of an important environmental project to clean the Miass River is continuing in Chelyabinsk. Large-scale woven systems play a key role in the project — geotubes (STO 56910145-016-2015). By the end of 2024, three sites had already been prepared for the temporary storage of bottom sediments, and the arrangements for the fourth site are now being completed.

Cleaning technology:

  • A special dredger raises contaminated bottom sediments from the riverbed.

  • The sludge is directed through a slurry pipeline into geotubes — high-strength containers made of geosynthetic material that provide effective dewatering and safe storage of the sludge sediment.

  • After dewatering, the sediment is disposed of, while the treated water is returned to the river.

The work began at the site near Kommunar Pond and was temporarily suspended during the fish spawning period. Cleaning resumed in June 2025.
