The project to remediate accumulated environmental damage in Kazan is progressing at full pace. For more than fifty years, sludge fields covering over 100 ha have caused inconvenience to local residents.
On 23 September, Minister of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov inspected the sludge-field remediation site during a working visit. The Minister noted that once remediation is complete, 1.4 million people will enjoy fresh air and will no longer breathe the unpleasant odour that sometimes reaches the city today.
Sludge fields contain high-hazard sewage waste that emits an overpowering odour. More than 30 projects were considered in the search for technical solutions. The task of reducing the volume of sludge, neutralising it and disinfecting it will be carried out in several stages. The most environmentally friendly of the proposed projects became possible thanks to the use of reliable and durable modern polymer materials, including those manufactured by TechPolymer Group.
At present, sludge has been completely removed from cells 16 and 11 of the site. The main pipeline has been laid. Sludge removal continues in cells No. 17, 12 and 21. Crushed stone has been compacted in cell 16. The soil embankments have been reinforced with RD Geogrid, a layer of nonwoven synthetic material Bentotech ASL and Geomembrane type 4/2.
The remediation works are scheduled for completion in 2024.
