An alternative electricity generation solution is being implemented at the Taldomsky landfill

5 September 2023

At the Taldomsky municipal solid waste landfill, covering more than 4.5 hectares, workers have been installing solar panels to generate electricity since the beginning of September. This is the first reclaimed site in the Russian Federation where an alternative electricity solution is being implemented.

As a reminder, over 46 years the landfill accumulated 200 thousand tonnes of waste, and since 2022 reclamation works have been carried out here under the federal project «Clean Country» of the national project «Ecology».

The solar power plant will be installed because connection to the main power supply networks is not possible.

Thanks to this engineering solution, the solar power plant at the Taldomsky landfill will supply electricity to the utility module, local stormwater treatment facilities, the "Safe Region" video surveillance system and lighting.

The solar power plant will be commissioned within the next two weeks and will be used as the main electricity supplier to the landfill after the technical stage of reclamation.

It should also be noted that the installation of the degassing system, leachate collection system and drainage system has now been completed.

The installation of the upper layers of the protective cover is also nearing completion (a 3D Geomat layer for erosion control, a levelling layer and a fertile layer), while leachate is being pumped out and an earth-reinforced retaining wall is being constructed as part of the gabion installation works.

It is expected that by the end of 2023, the site of accumulated environmental damage in the Taldomsky urban district will be remediated and the biological stage of reclamation will begin.
