Reclamation continues at the Volovichi landfill using geosynthetics

3 February 2023

The reclamation of the closed Volovichi landfill near Kolomna in the Moscow Region is ongoing. The work is being carried out under the federal project «Clean Country» of the national project «Environment».

By the time the landfill was closed in 2019, almost 2.5 million cu. m of waste had accumulated. The total reclamation area exceeds 23 ha. The work is proceeding according to schedule.

The landfill body is being formed, a reinforced-soil retaining wall is being constructed, and the surface between the cells is being backfilled with sandy loam.

A leachate collection reservoir lined with a V-Lock polymer anchor sheet manufactured by «TechPolymer» was prepared for construction. Welders are now welding the seams of the anchor sheet to ensure complete watertightness and protect the reinforced concrete from the aggressive environment.

In parallel, work is underway to install the reinforcement layer of the landfill’s upper protective cover, made of RD-100 geogrid, which redistributes loads, prevents uneven settlement and intermixing of the cover’s granular layers.

In addition, a unique environmentally safe material, «Bentoplast», made from a mixture of sand, polymer particles and bentonite clay, is used to install the technological layer of the upper protective cover.

At the same time, the base for the treated wastewater reservoir is being prepared.

Reclamation of the Volovichi landfill began in December 2021 and is scheduled for completion in May 2024.
