Head of the Kolomna Urban District Alexander Grechishchev held a meeting at the closed municipal solid waste landfill «Volovichi» with representatives of the contractor that has started site reclamation. Representatives of the Kolomna Public Chamber, residents of nearby settlements and journalists took part in the meeting.
The total area of the «Volovichi» municipal solid waste landfill is 23 ha, and the volume of accumulated waste exceeds 2 million tonnes. The landfill was closed in 2019 after almost 30 years of operation. The reclamation contract was signed in December 2021, and a detailed work schedule was developed at the same time.
«The reclamation project provides for forced degassing and leachate collection. The contractors are open to communication with the public working group from the district. Throughout all stages of reclamation, we will organise similar meetings to address various issues as the work progresses», said Head of the municipality Alexander Grechishchev.
A representative of the organisation carrying out the work at the site described the plan for the upcoming work in detail: «The task is to form the landfill body, collect the waste, move it upwards with intermediate covering, build a reinforced soil wall to retain the waste and, after the landfill is closed with a waterproofing dome, the gases will no longer be released. The work will be carried out in designated sections to prevent gas from escaping from the entire landfill», Alexander Sotnikov told the meeting participants.
Work has now begun at the site to form the landfill body and install a filtration barrier that will prevent leachate from leaving the landfill.
According to the design documentation, the following work stages are planned at the landfill:
- Replanning of buried waste, terracing, reshaping and compaction of slopes
- Construction of retaining walls
- Installation of a protective cover on the upper surface of the landfill using materials «Bentotech» and «Geomembrane Type 4/2», on top of which a drainage layer made of «Hydromat 2D» will be installed, followed by «Geomat 3D» for erosion protection and securing the seeds of perennial grasses
- Installation of an active landfill degassing system for the collection and neutralisation of landfill gas
- Installation of a drainage system for collecting and removing leachate
- Site improvement and planting of grasses and other plants.
According to the design documentation, the site is to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2024. By that time, a grass-covered hill should stand on the site of the huge landfill.
