The Shirokorechensky landfill in Yekaterinburg was commissioned in 1960, and waste disposal there ceased in 2015. During the landfill’s operation, 6.03 million cubic metres of waste accumulated, and the total area of the remediation site is 23.13 hectares.
The work is being carried out as part of the “Ecology – Clean Region” project. The landfill body is currently being formed, access roads are being arranged, and a temporary fence is being installed. The next stage will involve installing a protective screen made of geosynthetic materials, as well as a landfill gas collection and neutralisation system.
At the final stage, the fertile soil layer will be restored, sown with perennial grasses and made suitable for reuse, minimising the landfill’s negative impact on the environment.
The planned completion date is 2024.
