At the end of 2022, preparatory work began for the remediation of the closed landfill in the Sovetsky District of Omsk. The Sovetskaya» landfill was opened in 1986 and operated until 1999. The landfill consists of two sections. The total remediation area will be 23.5 ha.
In July 2022, regional authorities discussed the «waste» issue, which is a major concern for the city, with Victoria Abramchenko, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation. As part of the national project «Ecology», the closed landfill in Omsk’s Sovetsky District will be eliminated by 2024 using funds from the federal, regional and local budgets.
The remediation project, which received a positive conclusion from Glavgosekspertiza, provides for the use of modern geosynthetic materials manufactured by the TechPolymer Group.
At present, the construction camp site is being set up, and workers are relocating landfill waste within the boundaries of the area being remediated. Geosynthetic materials are being delivered to form protective impermeable barrier systems.
