Approximately 600 geotubes were filled with sludge in Kazan

26 August 2024

In Kazan, a large-scale project to reclaim the sludge beds of the biological treatment facilities (BOS) continues to be implemented. The work has been carried out since 2021 as part of the federal project “Volga Rehabilitation” under the national “Ecology” project.

To carry out the work, the sludge bed is cleared of sludge. Then, to protect groundwater, a barrier is formed along the bottom of the sludge bed from layers of reinforcing RD Geogrid, “self-healing” bentonite mat Bentotech ASL, impermeable Geomembrane, and drainage geocomposite mat Hydromat 3D. Next, Geotubes are installed on the prepared base to dewater the sludge. As a result, “pressed” technogenic reclamation soil will remain inside the Geotubes.

By the end of the year, the project’s technical readiness is forecast to reach 87%. Alexander Shadrikov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, commented:

“To date, we have filled around 600 Geotubes. By the end of the year, we should fill 1,100 Geotubes, and around 600 Geotubes will remain for next year,” Shadrikov said.
