The remediation of the municipal solid waste landfill at kilometre 13 of Bezhetskoye Highway in the vicinity of Tver is ongoing. The landfill has not been operated since 2018.
More than half of the works planned under the project have already been completed at the site. The project is funded under the federal project «Volga Improvement», which is part of the national project «Environment».
The technical stage of landfill remediation is currently underway. It includes a number of structural solutions, in particular the construction of a reinforced-soil retaining wall.
The load-bearing structure of the reinforced-soil retaining wall (RSRW) is made of layers of compacted sand, between which rolls of «Stabigrunt» geotextile are installed as reinforcement and a seepage barrier. The woven «Stabigrunt» geotextile is characterised by high shear strength and resistance to tension. It reliably stabilises the soil and distributes loads evenly in the longitudinal and transverse directions, preventing landslides and embankment deformation. In addition, the RSRW is constructed on a crushed-stone base reinforced with a flat RD/M-100 geogrid made of high-strength composite strips thermally bonded to geotextile, which improves adhesion to the base.
The technical stage also includes the installation of protective screens for the base and surface of the landfill, the collection, treatment and utilisation of biogas, and the collection and treatment of leachate and surface runoff.
Remediation is considered complete when grass covers at least 80% of the landfill area. The total area of restored land will be 18.7 ha.
