Preparation for the remediation of sludge fields in Tatarstan

16 July 2021

Preparations are currently underway for the reclamation of sludge fields in the city of Kazan. These works are being organised as part of the federal project «Volga Rehabilitation» under the national project «Environment», in the area of «Elimination of accumulated environmental damage sites posing a threat to the Volga River». Following the reclamation, the sludge fields will become an environmentally safe area for the city’s further development.

Sewage treatment sludge accumulated over 50 years and occupies an area of approximately 100 ha. This area contains 3.9 million cubic metres of sludge with a mass of 4.4 million tonnes; the deposit depth ranges from 2 to 8.5 metres. In addition, the sludge fields are located in the immediate vicinity of the water protection zone of the Kuybyshev Reservoir, thereby posing a potential threat to the water body.

The reclamation works comprise two stages: technical and biological. First, the sludge will be dewatered, followed by the installation of a protective reclamation screen. The next stage will involve preparing and installing a fertile soil layer and sowing perennial grasses. As a result, the entire area currently occupied by the sludge fields will become suitable for use.

On 14 July, President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and Svetlana Radionova, Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources, visited the sludge fields of Kazan’s sewage treatment facilities and the new sludge thermal-mechanical treatment workshop during a working meeting. Details are featured in the «Vesti-Tatarstan» report.
