Under the national Ecology project, reclamation of sludge beds is ongoing in the capital of Tatarstan. This work will eliminate accumulated environmental damage posing a threat to the Volga River.
To date, part of the sludge beds has been filled with inert materials. These are the sludge cells located closest to the Kuibyshev Reservoir. Work is continuing on constructing a road along the dam. Workers are forming a subgrade layer from geosynthetic materials manufactured by «ТехПолимер» (Георешетка РД, Бентотех АСЛ, Геомембрана, Гидромат 3D), on which geotubes are placed in the cells.
The slurry pipeline is being installed, and the mixing stations are being assembled and configured. ТехПолимер pipes with a flanged connection are used for the slurry pipeline, enabling its repeated use.
The mixing cells are filled with water, and reagents are mixed. Monitoring is being carried out at the site, and the laboratory is collecting samples for analysis. In parallel, geotubes made of woven geosynthetic fabric are being filled; they retain the sludge inside while water passes through their walls. The work is proceeding according to schedule.
As a result of the reclamation project in Kazan, the geotubes will be laid in layers within the cells. The geotubes will retain “dewatered” technogenic soil—the reclamation material. Before reclamation, almost 100 ha of land was filled with sludge sediment. Once this large-scale project is completed, half of the area will be cleared of sludge and covered with inert materials, with a waterproofing barrier below to protect groundwater. Plants and trees will be planted on the site of the sludge beds.
