The reclamation of the Lesnaya municipal solid waste landfill continues

11 January 2024

Remediation works continue at the Lesnaya municipal solid waste landfill in Serpukhov District, Moscow Region. During the landfill’s operation, more than 1 million cubic metres of waste accumulated over an area of 33 ha.
Since 2022, remediation of the landfill has been carried out as part of the “Ecology and Environment of the Moscow Region” programme.

At present, 20 units of specialised equipment and 31 specialists are engaged at the site of accumulated environmental damage. Remediation works are carried out in two shifts.

A set of engineering and technical measures is being implemented to restore the area and improve the environment:

  • installation of a remediation cover consisting of reinforcing RD geogrid and sandy soil over an underlying protective layer of Bentoplast;
  • construction of a reinforced-soil retaining wall (RSRW) around the landfill perimeter, with soil stabilisation using woven geotextile Stabigrunt;
  • construction of a drainage prism for collecting runoff;
  • construction of slopes, collection and removal of leachate, and acceptance of geosynthetic materials.

Remediation is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
