Remediation works at the Volovichi municipal solid waste landfill continue

Landfill reclamation works continue at the Volovichi municipal solid waste landfill In Kolomna, reclamation of the Volovichi municipal solid waste landfill has been underway for two months. The works are being carried out under the municipal programme of the Kolomna Urban District, «Ecology and Environment», for 2018-2024.

The total area of the landfill plots is 23.1 ha. The landfill was operated in two phases from 1990 to 2019, with the accumulated waste volume during its operation amounting to 2 440 000 mЗ.

The landfill body is currently being formed through terracing, grading and compaction of the slopes. The slope ratio is 1:3, the length reaches 30 metres, and the height is up to 10 metres.

In parallel, a reinforced-soil retaining wall is being installed around the perimeter of the landfill body to retain the waste mass within the site boundaries and protect the adjacent area. An impermeable barrier is also being installed, embedded into the aquiclude, using «TechPolymer» Geospun to prevent landfill leachate from entering the groundwater.

In addition, as part of the preparatory works at the Volovichi landfill, storage ponds are being constructed to collect leachate, followed by its treatment at a local treatment facility. The slopes and bases of the storage ponds are waterproofed with Hydrox geosynthetic material manufactured by TechPolymer. This is a single-layer polymer material with a two-sided structure consisting of alternating recesses and projections arranged on both sides of the axis.
The material ensures complete waterproofing of the structure, while its structured surface provides reliable adhesion to the soils forming the bases of the storage ponds, allowing it to be installed on relatively steep slopes without additional labour costs.
