We continue to monitor the implementation of the sludge drying beds reclamation programme in Kazan. Last week, Deputy Head of the Executive Committee Iskander Giniyatullin reported that reclamation works at the sludge drying beds of Kazan’s Vodokanal had been completed by 70%. The sludge drying beds are located in a water protection zone near the Kuybyshev Reservoir. They are enclosed by earth embankments.
The project is being implemented under the federal “Volga Improvement” programme. As part of the reclamation works, a specialised dredger is removing accumulated wastewater from the sludge ponds. Using flexible hoses, sludge is pumped into large polymer woven geotubes, where excess water is pressed out of the sludge. After water filtration, the geotubes will contain the dewatered reclamation soil.
A slurry pipeline made of “TechPolymer” PE pipes has been installed at the site using flange connections. This will allow the pipeline to be dismantled after work is completed in one area and installed at a new production site. “TechPolymer” PE pipes are an excellent alternative to metal and other counterparts, outperforming them in most performance characteristics: they are made of PE-100 high-density polyethylene, offer high strength and flow capacity, and have a long service life (up to 50 years).
Implementation of the federal programme will allow more than 100 ha of land on the banks of the Volga to be returned to the city’s economic use after the work is completed. According to Kazan City Hall in November 2023, after 50 years of operation, the biological wastewater treatment facilities had exceeded the capacity limit of the sludge drying beds. Reclamation of the site began in 2021.
