The final stage of the reclamation of Magnitogorsk’s left-bank landfill is underway. The reclamation of the Magnitogorsk landfill is being carried out based on the experience of reclaiming the Chelyabinsk municipal landfill, which was recognised as Russia’s best environmental project.
Key work results to date:
- the landfill body has been formed;
- a protective screen consisting of geosynthetic layers has been installed;
- an active degassing system has been installed, including biogas flaring units that have been commissioned (equipment capacity: 1000 m3/hour):

- a drainage system has been installed at the landfill to collect and divert leachate to the treatment facilities;
- commissioning of the leachate treatment plant is currently underway:

The result of the leachate treatment plant’s operation will be technically clean water (permeate), which will be accumulated in a reservoir made of polymer modules «БлокТех» manufactured by "ТехПолимер". The useful volume of the quickly assembled modular «БлокТех» reservoirs is 95%.

According to the contractor’s estimates, the landfill body contains approximately 50,000 cubic metres of leachate. These volumes will be fully treated over eight to ten years. The treated technical water will be used for the landfill’s needs (watering plants, dust suppression on roads, etc.).
According to specialists, the reclamation will be completed by the end of the year. All work is being carried out as part of the «Clean Air» project under the national «Ecology» project.
