The reclamation of the Chelyabinsk municipal landfill is entering its final stage. Full completion of the landfill reclamation is planned for November 2021. The biological stage of the work remains to be completed, along with a number of infrastructure tasks.
The Chelyabinsk landfill had operated since 1949, and its reclamation had been planned since 1993. However, waste disposal there actually ceased on 11 September of the year before last. This was insisted upon by the environmental prosecutor's office and the regional government. The landfill covered an area of 74 hectares, while the height of its waste mass reached 42 metres. In 2018, the landfill was closed to waste reception, and its reclamation began in 2019.
As of today, the main scope of work has been completed. In 2020, the waste landfill was reshaped and covered with layers of geosynthetic materials (a hydromat, geomembrane, bentonite mat and others). Work was carried out to install systems for collecting and treating leachate and stormwater, as well as a system for collecting and utilising biogas.
Environmental protection requires comprehensive measures: the reclamation of the Chelyabinsk municipal landfill, alongside reducing emissions from industrial enterprises, is an integral part of the comprehensive plan to improve the city's environmental conditions. It is also part of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources' federal project «Clean Country».
