The reclamation of the Chastsy municipal solid waste landfill has been completed in the Odintsovo urban district as part of the federal Clean Country project and the state programme “Ecology and Environment of the Moscow Region”, the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Food of the Moscow Region reports.
“The landfill was operated from 1974 to 2014. During this period, almost 4 million cubic metres of waste accumulated here across an area of more than 16 hectares. The reclamation project was developed in 2019, with MSU-1 JSC acting as the contractor,” said Tikhon Firsov, head of the ministry.
As part of the reclamation, the landfill body was shaped to the required configuration, and a retaining wall reinforced with a RD geogrid was constructed, using “Stabigrunt” material to stabilise the slopes. A protective landfill cover made of geosynthetic materials was installed (type 4/2 geomembrane, 5/2, and “Bentotech” bentonite mat), along with an active degassing unit and a leachate collection and treatment system. At the final stage, the landfill body was covered with a layer of fertile soil and perennial grasses were planted on it. The total cost of the work amounted to RUB 2.9 billion. Next year, work on the biological stage and operation of the installed equipment will continue.
It is worth noting that reclamation of the Yegoryevsky, Volovichi, Safonovo, Zavolenye, Taldomsky, Nepeyno, Lesnaya, Yadrovo and Povarovo landfills is currently continuing in the region. Contractors have also begun reclamation of the Shatursky landfill.
Earlier, regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that landfill reclamation work in the Moscow Region is planned to be completed within two years. The sites are to be brought into compliance with the highest environmental standards.
