Remediation of the Krasny Bor landfill under the national Ecology project will be completed in 2024

4 April 2021

Background information.Krasny Bor is a landfill for the disposal and storage of Class I–V industrial toxic waste from enterprises in St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

It is the only facility for the burial of hazardous industrial waste in the Northwestern Federal District. The landfill is located in the Tosnensky District of the Leningrad Region, near the settlement of Krasny Bor and not far from Kolpino and St Petersburg.

The landfill covers 70 storage cells with an area of 46 ha, which contained approximately 2 million tonnes of waste of various hazard classes when operations were suspended in 2014.

In 2020, the landfill was transferred to federal ownership, and in May 2021, pilot industrial tests of a technology for processing the contents of the landfill's open cells will be conducted. The results of this work will form part of the design documentation for the second stage of reclamation. The design work is to be completed by the end of 2021.

Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko said that, under the national project «Ecology» plan, comprehensive reclamation of the «Krasny Bor» landfill will be completed in 2024. By a Government decision, FSUE «Federal Environmental Operator» of the «Rosatom» state corporation has been appointed to carry out all stages of the work.

«Hazardous chemicals were brought to the „Krasny Bor“ landfill from throughout the Soviet Union. There is no documentation confirming the composition of the waste in any particular cell. Therefore, we must now conduct the investigations very carefully, draw the correct conclusions, make sure that we know what these chemicals are and what to do with them during the reclamation process,» said Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko.

The final stage will be biological reclamation. Once the site has been made safe, it will be sown with grass. However, the land will retain its industrial-use designation. The regional administration will decide how to use the area.
