Remediation of the Shirokorechensky Landfill as Part of the Clean Country Federal Project

28 August 2023

The biological stage of the reclamation of the Shirokorechensky municipal solid waste landfill in Yekaterinburg is underway.

The municipal solid waste disposal facility operated from 1960 to 2015. Approximately 6 million cubic metres of waste accumulated over an area of 23 ha.  Reclamation of the disturbed land has been underway since June 2021 as part of the federal Clean Country project under the national Ecology project.

During the technical stage of reclamation, the landfill body was reconfigured, slopes were formed and terraces were constructed. A degassing system was installed to extract harmful landfill gas. A leachate collection and drainage system was also installed.

The low-permeability cover constructed on the surface using geosynthetic materials (Bentonite mat, Geomembrane type 4/2, Hydromat 3D) manufactured by TECHPOLYMER Group, together with natural materials, will prevent the release of pollutants into the atmosphere and protect the waste from precipitation.

The biological stage of reclamation is currently underway. Grasses have been planted on the prepared fertile soil.

To protect the structure from waterlogging and erosion by surface water, a system of spillways and stilling basins was installed along the slopes at the foot of the landfill body using geocell backfilled with crushed stone. A stormwater collection ditch was constructed around the perimeter of the landfill body.

The project will result in the elimination of the accumulated environmental damage site and a reduction in the environmental impact associated with the long-term disposal of municipal solid waste.
