On 2 November 2021, Yekaterinburg Head Alexey Orlov, together with Alexey Kuznetsov, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Sverdlovsk Region, inspected the progress of work to reclaim the Shirokorechensky municipal solid waste landfill, carried out as part of the national project «Ecology».
The site used for waste disposal and storage, which had been operating since 1965, was decommissioned in 2015.
Work is currently underway to form the landfill body, which will subsequently be covered with an impermeable barrier made of geosynthetic materials. This technology will help eliminate the negative impact of 6 million cubic metres of hazardous waste. The landfill will be degassed, and landfill leachate will be collected and removed. The area of the landfill, covering approximately 30 hectares, will then be landscaped. Ultimately, the site will be fully reclaimed and made completely safe for the environment.
As Alexey Orlov emphasised, reclamation of the Shirokorechensky landfill is proceeding strictly in accordance with the schedule established by the municipal contract.
