Earth Day is a holiday celebrated annually on 22 April. In 2025, it is dedicated to the theme of renewable energy. On this day, various environmental campaigns, community clean-up events and lectures take place around the world, along with a call to protect the environment — the Bells of Peace.
The official name of the holiday is International Mother Earth Day, although in Russia and many other countries it is known as Earth Day.
The holiday originated in the United States in 1970 thanks to Gaylord Nelson, who sought to draw attention to environmental issues. The UN officially recognised it in 2009, while the campaign became international in 1990. In 1992, the UN held the Earth Summit.
