As the Rostov landfill rapidly expanded, it became the largest facility in the Southern Federal District and entered the top five in the nationwide negative ranking.
The complex consists of three waste mounds, each containing approximately three million tonnes of waste. Now, at the final stage of reclamation, this waste is covered with layers of geotextile, geomembrane and biomats, which serve as a protective barrier. These materials prevent pollutants from entering the atmosphere and protect the landfill from precipitation, preventing leachate formation. Particular attention has been paid to the degassing system.
The high-temperature flare unit can process biogas at a capacity of up to 1 500 m3/h. To ensure uninterrupted operation, two permanent units and one backup unit have been installed. As a result, biogas does not enter the atmosphere but is burned in special flares equipped with purification filters, preventing air pollution from combustion products.
The site also includes local wastewater treatment facilities that will process leachate after it passes through the landfill waste. The system includes several evaporation ponds with a total volume of 3 000 m3. These ponds are intended to collect surface water and will be used to irrigate grass at the landfill. A system for collecting and draining surface runoff is also provided; it includes composite drainage channels manufactured by "TechPolymer".
The facility is scheduled for commissioning by the end of the year.
