In the coming months, researchers will collect comprehensive information on the environmental condition of the area around «White Sea» and provide recommendations on how to eliminate this site of accumulated environmental damage in southern Volgograd.
Specialists from the contractor organisation have begun collecting samples. For this purpose, exploratory drilling is being carried out every 50 metres. In total, approximately 800 water, air and soil samples will be taken from the sludge storage site itself and from adjacent areas within a distance of 1 kilometre.
The number of areas with similar waste composition, as well as their coordinates and depth, will then be determined. A 3D model of the site will also be developed, including its boundaries, coordinates and a description of the natural and man-made conditions.
The design and cost estimate documentation will propose a method for eliminating the hazardous site. It will be assessed in terms of environmental and economic efficiency, and the project materials will be submitted for state environmental review.
The work to study «White Sea» is being carried out במסגרת the national project «Ecology». The study of the sludge storage site will be completed by the end of 2021. Specialists will then determine the most effective solution to the problem, and the next stage will be the elimination of the hazardous site of accumulated environmental damage. All work is planned to be completed in 2024.
