Geotube Technology Safeguarding the Environment: Progress of the Miass River Cleanup

10 December 2025

The geotubing technology protecting the environment: progress of the Miass River cleanup works A large-scale project to restore the Chelyabinsk Region’s main waterway—the Miass River—is being successfully implemented. In November 2025, another significant stage of the work was completed, during which more than 1.5 million cubic metres of bottom sediments were removed. An advanced technology—geotubing.

played a key role in the safe and efficient dewatering of the sludge.

TechPolymer, as a manufacturer and supplier of technological solutions, acted as a project partner, supporting the process with modern geotextile containers (geotubes).

How geotubing technology works
The riverbed was cleaned using dredgers that raised slurry—a mixture of water, sludge and sand. The slurry was transported through pipelines to temporary storage areas, where it was pumped into durable geotubes from TechPolymer.

  • Operating principle: The woven geotextile from which the containers are made allows water to pass through freely while retaining solid particles. This naturally separates the water from the sludge, significantly reducing its volume and weight.

  • Result: The sludge is dewatered and stabilised inside the geotube, becoming safe to transport and subsequently dispose of at designated landfills.

Benefits of using geotubing in the project:

  • Environmental safety: The risk of secondary water and soil pollution is eliminated because all sludge is isolated.

  • Economic efficiency: Logistics costs are reduced by decreasing the volume of waste.

  • Technology:  The process can be carried out in densely built-up urban areas without disrupting infrastructure.

The Miass River cleanup project is scheduled to continue until 2028. TechPolymer’s participation in this project, which is significant for the region’s environmental protection, confirms the company’s status as a reliable supplier of solutions for environmental protection and hydraulic engineering applications. Our technologies provide not only efficiency but also compliance with the strictest environmental standards.
