The final works of the technical stage are nearing completion at the reclamation sites—the Yegoryevsky landfill in the Moscow Region and the Bezhetskoye Highway site in Tver. Workers are constructing drainage channels using a modern material—concrete canvas STO 56910145-025-2017.
At present, at the Yegoryevsky landfill builders are preparing the drainage system along the service roads. To do this, they form trenches of the required size in the ground. They then carefully line the trench with concrete canvas, laying it with overlaps in the direction of water flow. After installation, the canvas is secured with special anchors and thoroughly wetted with water. Thus, constructing a concrete drainage channel does not require special mixing equipment. 
The “Yegoryevsky” landfill operated for approximately 50 years, during which 2.5 million tonnes of waste accumulated across its area of approximately ten ha. It was closed several years ago, after which its reclamation began as part of the national “Ecology” project and the “Clean Country” programme. By the end of May, this site will become the first landfill in the Moscow Region to be reclaimed in 2024.
At the landfill in Tver, the method used to construct the surface drainage system is slightly different. To reinforce the base of the future drainage channel, a layer of road reinforcement RD geogrid is laid on the compacted base. Two soil embankments are formed above the geogrid in the shape of a trench, which will serve as a surface drainage channel. Concrete canvas is then laid in this trench with overlaps in the direction of water flow, with the joints secured using special fasteners, and is additionally fixed with anchors.
Thanks to the flexibility of the concrete canvas, the builders easily formed sharp bends in the drainage channels (the canvas conforms to the shape of any trench or embankment). After wetting, the canvas hardened and became a reliable drainage structure, as its strength is comparable to reinforcement with concrete slabs.
Reclamation work has been underway at the Bezhetskoye Highway landfill in Tver since the beginning of summer 2021. The work will restore 18.7 ha of land. The formation of the landfill body, construction of the protective cover, and installation of the biogas and leachate collection and drainage systems have already been completed. The final stage of reclamation is landscaping.
