The contaminated areas are being remediated at the site of the former Srednevolzhsky Chemical Plant, which covers 263 hectares.
Over many years, waste from chemical production accumulated at this major site of environmental damage, where production buildings, sludge storage ponds and sludge settling ponds operated.
As part of the remediation of this major site, soil-cement piles are being installed, bank protection works are being carried out, and a perimeter fence is being erected. As a result, a 2-metre-thick, 27-metre-deep perimeter cut-off barrier—similar to a concrete sarcophagus—will be built around the source of hazardous waste.
The builders are also excavating a pit for a drainage prism and laying reinforcing geogrid RD with sand backfill in the body of the sludge settling pond, one of the most hazardous facilities on the site.
As a result, a cut-off screen using “TechPolymer” geosynthetic materials will be installed, and a drainage system will be constructed. This will prevent toxins from entering the soil and the waters of the Chapayevka River, protecting against the risk of toxic substances entering the Volga River.
The large-scale project is expected to be completed within three years.
