Work has begun in Chelyabinsk to clean the Miass River, the city’s main waterway. Specialists are using modern equipment and woven geocontainers with unique properties for dewatering sludge.
The contractor has started removing sludge using specialised equipment. This equipment, a dredger, will help clean the river, as it can perform a wide range of hydromechanical works. The amphibious dredger is currently scooping sludge from the bank with a bucket. The bucket will then be replaced with another “attachment”, and the process of transporting sludge from the riverbed will begin.
The sludge will be pumped through a dedicated pipeline to a temporary sludge accumulation and storage site. More precisely, it will be pumped into large textile geocontainers (Geotubes STO 56910145-016-2015) with unique filtration characteristics. This will prevent the unpleasant odour of bottom sediments from spreading in the urban environment.
Excess water will pass through the Geotube walls and be supplied to a wastewater treatment plant. The treated water will then be returned to the Miass, while the sludge dewatered in the geocontainers will be used as fertiliser for landscaping in Chelyabinsk.
The project will take several years to complete. By 2028, more than 19 km of the river channel will have been cleaned and restored.
