The Nepейno municipal solid waste landfill was operated in gross violation of environmental legislation, causing significant damage to the environment. Over its entire operating period, 1.6 million cubic metres of waste accumulated. Reclamation of the 12-hectare landfill began in November last year under the federal Clean Country project of the Ecology national project.
Work at the site is proceeding according to schedule. The current activities include cutting and relocating waste, installing a seepage barrier and pumping out landfill leachate.
To prevent rainwater from entering the landfill body, the project includes, among other measures, a surface runoff collection and drainage system using geosynthetic materials manufactured by TechPolymer Group. This will include constructing a channel from a modern, innovative material – concrete canvas. This flexible fabric, impregnated with a dry concrete mix, hardens when wetted and forms a strong, watertight concrete layer of the required shape. Concrete canvas is resistant to chemicals and various weather conditions and does not deteriorate under ultraviolet radiation. This solution is more environmentally friendly and less labour-intensive than conventional concrete, as it does not require specialised equipment for concrete mixing. In addition, concrete canvas up to 13 mm thick replaces 100–150 mm of conventional concrete, reducing the carbon footprint of construction.
Stormwater will flow through channels made of concrete canvas into reinforced-concrete stormwater inlets using a polymer V-lock lining anchor sheet. V-lock sheet lining is designed to protect the concrete surfaces of the wells from chemically aggressive environments, corrosion, wear and deterioration. The stormwater inlets are connected to a closed storm sewer network, through which contaminated water is conveyed to a surface runoff storage tank for subsequent treatment at local treatment facilities to meet discharge standards for water bodies used for fisheries.
The use of a set of modern engineering solutions at environmental protection facilities makes it possible to effectively eliminate the consequences of accumulated environmental damage.
Reclamation of the Nepейno landfill is scheduled for completion at the end of 2024.
