The remediation of one of the largest landfills in the Moscow Region—the Volovichi municipal solid waste landfill in Kolomna—has been completed. The Kolomna Urban District Administration reported on a meeting held at the site with representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Deputy Head of the Urban District Dmitry Khodasevich, local residents and the contractor. The meeting focused on the results of the work and future prospects.
At the site, which accumulated almost 2.5 million cubic metres of waste over its operating history, a substantial amount of work was carried out:
- Temporary leachate collection ponds were constructed, followed by leachate treatment, and a leachate treatment facility was built. The slopes and bottoms of the collection ponds were lined with profiled geomembrane «Гидрокс», manufactured by «ТехПолимер», which ensures complete waterproofing of the structure.
- The landfill body was formed and a reinforced-soil retaining wall was constructed using high-strength geotextile «Стабигрунт» to retain the waste within the site boundaries. An anti-filtration barrier was also installed, embedded into the impermeable layer using Геошпунта «ТехПолимер», to prevent landfill leachate from entering groundwater.
- A protective landfill cover was installed with a bottom layer of «Георешётки РД-100» to ensure local stability. A stabilising layer was then constructed from a system of horizontal and vertical geodrains to collect biogas from the landfill body for subsequent flaring at a high-temperature flare unit as part of the active degassing system. A gas drainage layer made of «Гидромата 3D» and a waterproofing system consisting of bentonite mat layers «Бентотех АСЛ» and textured geomembrane «Гидрокс» were installed.
- An active degassing system was installed, consisting of geosynthetic materials, collectors, a compressor and a pipeline system made of special gas pipes, through which landfill gas is transported to treatment units for subsequent flaring.
- A local wastewater treatment system was established to treat stormwater and snowmelt. Surface runoff is collected through a drainage system formed from flexible concrete matting «ТехПолимер».
- Topsoil was placed over the landfill surface and perennial plants were planted.
«All work has been completed, but we continue to monitor and control the condition of the landfill. Air measurements will be carried out here twice a year. In addition, to reassure local residents, flare operation at the landfill will be monitored continuously,» said Deputy Head of the District Dmitry Khodasevich.
Remediation of the site began in 2021 under the “Clean Country” project of the national “Ecology” project.
