A Huge Landfill Is Being Remediated in Krasnodar

2 November 2023

In the Prikubansky intra-city district of Krasnodar, an old landfill is being remediated under the federal “Clean Country” project of the national “Environment” project.

The remediation of the old landfill began in the first half of 2023, and part of the technical work has now been completed. The landfill body has been formed into a regular geometric shape. The volume of municipal solid waste relocated amounted to 66 000 cubic metres.

Work is under way to install a protective cover with an area of 114 011 m2. The landfill body will be protected from atmospheric precipitation by the geosynthetic roll material «Гидрокс 2D» with simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. «Гидрокс 2D» is a two-layer polymer material consisting of a profiled geomembrane with alternating recesses and projections and a protective drainage coating made of nonwoven geotextile on one side. Thanks to its properties, «Гидрокс 2D» will provide absolute watertightness, reduce the costs of delivering and installing discrete material, and reduce the thickness of the drainage layer.

The installation of the leachate collection and drainage system and the construction of a passive pipe-based degassing system are also actively under way. A fence will be installed around the perimeter of the site, totalling 1 946 linear metres.

The remediation work at the Krasnodar landfill is proceeding according to schedule and will be completed with the biological stage at the end of 2024.
