The MSW landfill has begun to be remediated in Rostov-on-Don. For a long time, waste from across the city was brought here, to the north-western industrial zone. It was closed five years ago. However, unpleasant odours and harmful emissions into the air remained.
The remediation is being carried out under the national project «Ecology» and the federal project «Clean Country». At this stage, the landfill is being covered with inert materials, and the waste mass is being relocated. The installation of special systems will begin soon.
As part of the technical remediation stage, active and passive degassing systems will be installed to remove and utilise the landfill gas generated by the landfill, along with a system for collecting and diverting stormwater and meltwater to local wastewater treatment facilities.
All of this will be covered with a layer of geosynthetics (to protect against atmospheric precipitation penetrating the landfill body), as well as a reclamation layer. The land will be given a new lease of life: grass and trees will be planted here.
