The “White Sea” sludge storage facility in Volgograd’s Kirovsky District was established in the middle of the last century on the site of the former Khimprom plant. The hazardous facility occupies an area of 25 ha, and the volume of accumulated sludge is approximately 1.5 million cubic metres. The sludge storage facility will be remediated after additional engineering surveys are conducted to determine the most suitable remediation method and the composition of of the waste contained in it.
The remediation of the chemically hazardous facility is planned as part of the regional and federal projects “Revitalisation of the Volga” under the national Ecology project.
A contractor has now been selected to carry out engineering surveys at the “White Sea”. The contractor will conduct engineering surveys and create a 3D model of the sludge storage facility, which will form the basis for the future design and cost-estimate documentation for the remediation of the “White Sea” and the rehabilitation of contaminated areas.
Under the contract, the work must be completed by mid-December of the current year. The completed project will be submitted to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources in April 2022.
