In Kazan, work has begun on the reclamation of sludge lagoons at the biological wastewater treatment facilities located on the shore of the Kuybyshev Reservoir between the Otary and Staroye Pobedilovo settlements.
The sludge lagoons cover an area of more than 100 ha and are divided into two sections: the old lagoons, commissioned in 1974, and the new lagoons, located west of the old ones and first used thirty years ago, in 1991. The total volume of accumulated sludge deposits in the lagoons reaches 4.4 million cubic metres.
The reclamation work will be carried out in stages. The first stage involves preparing a process flow sheet required for the preliminary dilution of the sludge, including the installation of a bottom liner and a vertical cutoff barrier. During the second stage, the geotubes are filled with sludge and the sludge is treated with reagents, resulting in a safe product suitable for the technical reclamation of disturbed land. The final stage involves installing a top sealing liner and passive degassing wells, which protect the environment from biogas emissions.
