Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko visited Chelyabinsk on a working visit and reviewed the progress of reclamation of the city landfill – the largest and most hazardous waste accumulation site in the city.
The reclamation of the landfill began in 2018 as part of the national project «Ecology». The technical stage of reclamation is now nearing completion, and in summer 2021 the landfill will become a green hill.
«I would like to highlight the results of the reclamation: emissions of harmful substances into the city’s atmosphere have been reduced by 30%, leachate discharge from the landfill has been completely stopped, and contamination of water and soil has been prevented. This is a specific example of the positive impact of the national project «Ecology» on quality of life. For more than one million people, this site will become a genuine living space for recreation», said Viktoria Abramchenko.
The reclamation of the Chelyabinsk landfill will completely eliminate its negative impact on the city’s environment and will become one of the largest projects of its kind in the country.
«... There is currently no other site of this kind in the country», Viktoria Abramchenko noted.
Alexey Teksler, Governor of Chelyabinsk Region, noted that the reclamation of the landfill is part of a comprehensive plan to improve the city’s environment. There are no longer any odours or emissions at the landfill; a number of infrastructure tasks and biological reclamation remain to be completed.
