The meeting took place on 5 June, Russia’s Ecologist Day and World Environment Day, in the Tosno District.
Dmitry Medvedev, Alexey Likhachev and the Governor of the Leningrad Region Alexander Drozdenko discussed plans to remediate the «Krasny Bor» site for toxic industrial waste.
The «Krasny Bor» site is one of the most hazardous sites of accumulated environmental damage in the Russian Federation. The site operated from 1969 to receive and dispose of chemical and industrial waste; its operations were suspended in 2014. The site contains 70 storage cells: 65 have already been covered with soil, while 5 cells are under constant monitoring. In total, more than 2 million tonnes of Class I–V hazardous waste are stored here.
The site is planned to be neutralized by 2024 as part of the federal «Clean Country» project. The plan for carrying out the comprehensive remediation design is undergoing official approval, while the regional authorities are holding a public discussion of the project with local residents.
Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev particularly emphasized the need to take local residents’ views on the remediation of the «Krasny Bor» site into account.
